OUR BEGINNING
In July 2022, a group of citizens with a shared vision for the future of their small town of Downs, KS, came together to form what is known as Downs Community Connection (DCC).
Founders Cheryl Slipke Goheen, Linda Long Miller, Crystal Slipke Cline, Kelly Meyer, Janet Long Carl, Miranda Robinson, Brittany Reinert, and Amy Brown Schmitt organized a community meeting to discuss dreams, goals, and ideas for strengthening the town.
Approximately 35 community members attended the initial brainstorming session. From that meeting, the group adopted the name Downs Community Connection with the byline:
“Building Strong Connections in Our Community.”
DCC was later approved for nonprofit 501(c)(3) status. The volunteer group has held monthly meetings since its inception and completed several projects of community improvements.
Since that first community meeting, DCC has grown into an active nonprofit organization focused on strengthening community pride, preserving local history, and
creating welcoming spaces for residents and visitors alike.
From 2022 through 2025, DCC has led a wide range of projects that have significantly improved public spaces throughout town. Early efforts focused on restoring and
enhancing key landmarks, including updates to the historic gazebo and Railroad Park
with a new roof, lighting, electrical improvements, landscaping, and seating. Seasonal decorations were expanded with refurbished LED Christmas lighting and the addition
of a large community Christmas tree. At Roadside Park, improvements included
repainting shelter houses and ballfield structures, upgrading the concession stand with signage, a canopy, and a new water fountain, adding updated bleacher signage, and
refreshing the Sod & Stubble display with new graphics and a pamphlet holder for visitors. Additional beautification projects included mural installations, new downtown banners,
and the replacement of “Welcome to Downs” signs with a design inspired by historic
pre-1960s signage at key entrances to the community. DCC has also placed strong emphasis
on bringing the community together through events and activities for all ages.
Annual events such as Draggin’ Main Cruise Night and Fall Family Fun Day continue to
grow, featuring activities like scavenger hunts, games for children, food, and live entertainment. The organization has hosted food stands during the Kansas Storytelling Festival, tailgates, trunk-or-treat events, and other gatherings that
encourage community involvement and connection.
To support these efforts, DCC has successfully utilized a combination of grant funding, donations, and creative fundraising initiatives. Fundraisers have included apparel sales, raffles, Super Bowl squares, community meals, and other events. In addition, DCC
established the “Believe in Downs” endowed fund through the Osborne County
Community Foundation to ensure long-term sustainability of community improvement projects. Community support has remained strong, with additional contributions from
local donors, memorials, and matching grant opportunities such as OCCF Impact Day.
A major focus for DCC moving forward is the development of a Veterans Memorial Park
at 421 Morgan Avenue. After purchasing the property and completing demolition with
grant funding, plans are underway to create a dedicated space honoring local veterans, complete with engraved memorials, walkways, landscaping, and additional parking to
support nearby Memorial Hall. Future plans also include continued improvements to
Roadside Park, including the development of a new, all-inclusive playground
designed for all ages and abilities.
Through volunteer efforts, strong partnerships, and ongoing community support,
Downs Community Connection continues to make meaningful progress in enhancing
the town. With a commitment to both preserving the past and building for the future,
DCC remains dedicated to “Building Strong Connections in Our Community.”
